Frequently asked questions
How does the compression work?
Each page is redrawn as an image at a lower resolution and saved as a compressed JPEG. That is very effective for scans, photos and slides. The trade-off is that text in the result can no longer be selected or searched.
Why didn't my PDF get smaller?
PDFs that are mostly text and vector graphics are already tiny, and turning them into images can make them bigger. In that case we keep your original file and tell you so. Try the Strong level, or use this tool for scanned and photo-heavy documents.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is processed entirely inside your browser, so it never leaves your device.
